There’s nothing wrong with walking, but if that’s the only way you’re going to explore a city you’re really doing yourself a disservice. Check out this list of exciting and unusual ways to explore a city, and discover an area you might think you know from an entirely different perspective. Whether you’re planning a weekend adventure or just looking to wile away a couple of hours after work, there’s nothing like re-experiencing something you thought you knew, through a completely new set of eyes.

Skating

You don’t have to be Tony Hawk to start skating around town. Whether you’re a seasoned shredder or a novice newbie, there’s nothing like feeling the wind in your hair as you cruise around the pavement. Check out the local skating bowl, grab some gear from Z-Flex Skateboards, cruise around some local attractions and discover your favourite pedestrian thoroughfare on four wheels. Impress some people on the way with a couple of kick-flips and have a blast exploring your city from a completely new perspective.

Draining

This one’s a little bit unusual, but if you want to see a city like you’ve never seen it before, head underground. Check if your city has a local urban exploration organisation and if they do there’s no reason not to make like a worm and go for a subterranean perspective. This might not be the most traditional experience, but if you’re looking for activities to do in your city this certainly offers a unique option.

Highest Viewpoint

On the other end of the scale, nothing beats a bird’s eye view. Whether it’s the Sydney Tower or the Eureka Skydeck, there’s always a great attraction in your city to get above and beyond everyone else to really admire the size and the scope of a city you’re exploring. Ask around with the locals and see if there are any alternative free attraction/viewpoints that allow you to get off the beaten track and provide an opportunity to marvel at the size and scale of the city you’re re-discovering.

By Night

If you’re used to checking out a town by day, maybe it’s just a matter of waiting a few hours and going for a stroll around town at night. Many cities come into a life of their own at night, providing an entirely different experience for urban explorers looking to re-discover their favourite metropolis. Consult with local guides to find out what places are safe and interesting, grab a coffee and head around town. Maybe there’s even a local ghost tour you join– the options are endless!
