We only get one body and it is highly important that we take care of it, because once it is destroyed, sometimes, there is no fix. Sure, you can get surgery for things, but why would you want to when taking proper care in the first place is such an easy preventative measure? One way you can work towards being healthy and keeping your body in tip top shape is to watch what you put in it. There are tons of things we use and consume on a daily basis that are actually really bad for us, like salt, fluoride toothpaste and even artificial sweeteners. There are healthier alternatives that can be substituted. Here is a bit about what you should avoid, and what to replace it with.
Tons of people totally love salt, and I used to be one of those people until I realized how horrible it really is for you. Salt makes you thirsty and retain water. It can also cause high blood pressure, so I have learned to stop eating so much of it and use it in moderation. However, salt can be replaced with other seasonings or even Mrs. Dash seasoning, which is made to replace salt.
2. Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners have actually been known to cause cancer and they’re really bad for your body, so it is important to avoid them at all costs. These sweeteners can be found in soda, candy and so many other foods. If you want something sweetened without calories or carbs go for stevia.
3. Fluoride Toothpaste
Fluoride toothpaste is widely available on the market, but should be avoided. The fluoride can damage teeth-forming cells for children, but too much fluoride can also be toxic. A natural toothpaste, such as Tom’s of Maine or a toothpaste without fluoride, but with baking soda is a healthier alternative.
Believe it or not, soda is actually really bad for you, especially cola. If you stick a chicken bone in cola, it will actually get rubbery. Instead of drinking soda, try drinking milk or water. Both options are far better for you, and if you really need something sweet and refreshing try water with cucumber, mint or lemon slices.
5. Ramen Noodles
Many people love Ramen noodles and they’re really affordable but they are not good for your body. These noodles have a waxy coating on them, which studies has actually found to be cancerous. No matter how much you like these salty, cheap noodles, avoid them and make some homemade chicken noodle soup.
6. Fast Food
While fast food, like McDonald’s may seem yummy and convenient, it is really bad for your body, and it is made from things you definitely wouldn’t want to eat. In fact, McDonald’s chicken nuggets are made from Pink Slime, and chicken byproducts. Boneless, skinless chicken can be breaded and taste so much better.
7. Energy Drinks
We all need a boost once in a while and most of us turn to energy drinks, like Red Bull, but these energy drinks are filled with caffeine and can cause your heart to race. Instead of chugging an energy drink, try drinking a cup of coffee or even an ice cold glass of water. You’d be surprised how much it can wake you up.
8. Chewable Vitamins
While chewable vitamins are tasty and easier to take than vitamins that you have to swallow, they’re not so good for you. If the vitamins contain vitamin C, they’re actually eating away at your insides, because they’re filled with ascorbic acid. Take a swallowable vitamin to be safe.
While fish is supposed to be good for you, it should actually be eaten in moderation, especially by pregnant women and children. If the fish comes from the ocean, there is a good chance that there is at least a trace of mercury in it, and this is terrible for your body. The larger the fish, like salmon and tuna, the more mercury they contain. Stick with smaller fish if you’re concerned about mercury levels.
10. Hot Sauce
I love hot sauce, but I realized how bad it can be for your body after I started feeling stomach pains. Because it is so spicy, it can actually eat away at your stomach. A healthier alternative would be to use some kind of seasoning in moderation.
As you can see, there are so many things we all consume on a daily basis that are terrible for our bodies. Try using the mentioned alternatives and see how much better you feel. Your body will thank you in the end, and chances are, you will live a longer, healthier life.
